The American Shubunkin is a stunning goldfish breed admired for its bright calico colors—mixes of blue, red, orange, black, and white—that spread across its body and fins. With a more streamlined body and longer tail than many fancy goldfish, it offers both beauty and a lively personality in freshwater aquariums. It’s popular among hobbyists because it’s hardy and eye-catching.

Origin

  1. The Shubunkin originates from Japan. It was developed around the early 1900s by crossing varieties like the calico telescope goldfish with the comet and common goldfish.
  2. The “American” variety (sometimes also called Japanese/American) developed later and is the type most widely seen, known for its long forked tail and sleek shape.

American Shubunkin Temperament

  1. This goldfish is peaceful in nature. It enjoys swimming actively and exploring its environment.
  2. It’s quite energetic compared to some slower fancy breeds, so it will appreciate open space to swim.
  3. Because of its active behavior and appetite, it might out-compete very slow or timid tank mates for food.

Compatibility

  1. American Shubunkin Good tankmates
  2. Killifish
  3. Cherry Barb
  4. Most Tetras
  5. Guppies
  6. Chinese Blue Bitterling
  7. Comet Goldfish
  8. Northern Redbelly Dace
  9. Fancy Goldfish
  10. Amano Shrimp

Avoid

  1. Tropical fish that require much warmer water; also, avoid very small fish or invertebrates that the Shubunkin might view as food, given its foraging behavior.
  2. When mixing with different goldfish forms (e.g., fancy types with short tails), ensure that swim-abilities and space needs are balanced.

American Shubunkin Price in India

  1. In India, you’ll find small/young Shubunkins priced from around ₹250-₹300 for a pair in standard size.
  2. Larger or show-quality specimens may go for ₹600-₹1,500 or more, depending on size, color, and tail form.

American Shubunkin Habitat Requirements

Initial Setup Cost

₹10,000 - ₹30,000

Water Temperature

18º -22ºC

Water Type

Fresh Water

PH Level

6.5 - 7.5

Tank Type

  1. Freshwater (not salt or brackish).
  2. A powerful filtration system is important because it produces quite a bit of waste.

American Shubunkin Aquarium Size

  1. Minimum recommended for an adult Shubunkin: about 75 liters (≈15-20 US gallons) or more. A larger tank is better.
  2. For outdoor ponds, they do very well too if the climate allows.

Water Conditions

  1. Temperature range: Ideally around 65-72 °F (15-21 °C) for comets and Shubunkins.
  2. pH level: Around 6.0 to 8.0 is suitable; a stable pH is more important than hitting a perfect number.
  3. Water hardness: 5-19 dGH, they are quite tolerant, but avoid very soft water; maintain a good filter and regular changes.
  4. Extras: Keep nitrates low (ideally under ~20 mg/L), avoid sudden changes in temperature or chemistry.

American Shubunkin Environment Needs

  1. Use smooth-edged decorations; avoid sharp rocks or narrow caves where their long tail fins can be damaged.
  2. Some hardy plants are okay, but expect some nibbling or digging. Provide an open swimming space.
  3. Strong filtration and good water movement help keep the environment healthy for this active fish.

American Shubunkin Nutritional Guide

Avg Monthly Expenses

₹200 - ₹ 300

Diet Type

  1. Omnivore: Eats both plant and animal-based foods.

American Shubunkin Suitable Foods

  1. Good quality goldfish pellets or granules (look for ~30-35% protein) for a staple diet.
  2. Occasional treats: frozen or live foods like brine shrimp or bloodworms.
  3. Vegetables such as shelled peas or blanched greens help variety.

Feeding Frequency & Tips

  1. Feed once daily if water is cooler; twice daily if water temp is higher (~21 °C or above).
  2. Only offer what can be eaten in a few minutes; remove uneaten food to keep water clean.
  3. Avoid overfeeding: excess food raises waste and harms water quality (which Shubunkins are sensitive to).
  4. Provide variety so your fish stay active and healthy.

Like all goldfish, American Shubunkin can face a few health problems if their environment isn’t well-maintained. Let’s look at some common American Shubunkin health issues and how to care for them properly.

Swim bladder disorder

Because Shubunkins have a streamlined body and a long tail, if overfed or fed a poor diet, they may struggle with buoyancy. The fish may float or lie on the bottom. Treatment: reduce feeding, feed a shelled pea (to relieve constipation), ensure clean, cool water.

Poor water quality & nitrate stress

These fish produce larger amounts of waste. If nitrates/ ammonia build up, you may see lethargy, loss of color, and fin deterioration. Prevent by strong filtration, regular water changes, and keeping nitrates below ~20 mg/L.

Fin damage or infections

Their long fins can be torn by sharp décor or fin-nippers. Torn fins may get infected (look for shredded fins or cloudy edges). Ensure good tank mates and smooth décor, and treat early with antibacterial fish medicine if needed.

American Shubunkin General Health Tips

  1. Before adding any fish, cycle your tank, which includes the filter and helpful bacteria.
  2. Avoid sudden fluctuations in temperature along with pH.
  3. Testing ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate, along with weekly partial water changes of 10-25% will help maintain water quality.
  4. Quarantine new fish before introducing them to the established tank to prevent disease spreading.
  5. Provide a good diet diversity. Avoid overfeeding.
  6. Watch fish to see if their behavior, color, or swimming changes.
