The Brown Gourami or Chocolate Gourami (Sphaerichthys osphronemus), is a small peaceful freshwater fish with deep brown color and pale vertically striped stripes. Its rounded belly and peaceful nature make it a favorite among beginners as well as aquarists.

Chocolate Gouramis are peaceful, timid, and slow-paced fish that prefer very planted tanks. They are different from more aggressive gouramis because they are ideal for community aquariums of other peaceful fish. Their stunning coloration and peaceful nature also make them the ideal fish to have in a calm tank.

Origin of the Chocolate Gourami

Wild Chocolate Gouramis inhabit Southeast Asia, i.e., Borneo, Sumatra, and Thailand. In the wild, they inhabit shallow, slow-moving streams, swamps, and peat water, typically in highly planted spots. These natural settings regulate their softly acidic water flavor and highly planted residence.

Temperament of the Chocolate Gourami

Chocolate Gouramis are peaceful, shy, and non-migratory. They barely show aggression but retreat instead behind plants and driftwood.

They have to be kept in a shoal of 6–8 to minimize stress and encourage natural schooling behavior.

Breeding males will mildly defend themselves, but fighting is minimized to the bare minimum with other species of gouramis.

Chocolate Gourami Compatibility with Other Fish

Chocolate Gouramis are compatible with other peaceful, small freshwater fish like:

  1. Ember Tetras
  2. Rasboras
  3. Corydoras Catfish
  4. Dwarf Shrimp

Keep them apart from bullying, high-swimming, or large fish who would fight them for food or bully them.

Price Range of the Chocolate Gourami

Chocolate Gouramis are moderately priced and typically range from ₹400–₹800 ($5–10) depending on size and availability. Large color forms or huge adult specimens can be pricier.
