The Comet Goldfish (Carassius auratus) is one of the most popular and most recognized aquarium species around the globe. In addition to its unique long, trailing tail and smooth, torpedo-shaped body, this fish not only livens the pond or aquarium but also brings beauty with its lively nature.

As opposed to fancy varieties, the Comet Goldfish is a sturdy fish, a fast swimmer, and a low-maintenance pet all in one. Therefore, it is suitable for all aquarists, whether they are newbies or experienced ones. Their antics and ability to adapt to different environmental conditions are the main reasons why they are chosen by both indoor and outdoor hobbyists.

Comet Goldfish History

The Comet Goldfish originated in America at the end of the 19th century, quite accidentally as a new variety of the common goldfish when fineness and active swimming behavior were noticed, and only then brought to the market.

When referring to wild goldfish, what we mean are the offspring of Prussian carp (Carassius gibelio), a species that is native to East Asia. Selective breeding through the years has resulted in numerous varieties of goldfish; yet Comet, with its shape, vigor, and glimmering colors, is still very much appreciated.

Temperament of Comet Goldfish

Comet goldfish are totally peaceful, very active, and sociable at the same time. They enjoy company, and in addition to this, they are suitable tank mates with other small fish that are non-aggressive. The main activities of the fish are swimming through the aquarium, searching for food in the gravel, and showing off their stunning tail fins.

Comet Goldfish Compatibility with Other Fish

Comet Goldfish are the happiest when they are in the company of other cold-water species. Make sure no aggressive or tropical fish come into the tank.

Best companions are as follows:

  1. Common Goldfish
  2. Shubunkin Goldfish
  3. White Cloud Mountain Minnows
  4. Dojo Loaches

Do not pair with Baby Eye or Celestial Goldfish as the latter ones are delicate and slow-moving so it is best not to have them around the Comets, as they may get too energetic for the former ones.

Price Range of the Comet Goldfish

Comet Goldfish is a fish that one could easily get as they are very cheap and commonly available. In India, their usually cost ranges between ₹100 and ₹400 based on size, color, and fin quality.

Comet goldfish are omnivorous, and in order to be healthy and keep their colors irresistibly bright, they need to always be fed with different kinds of food. The best food items are:

  1. High-quality goldfish flakes or pellets,
  2. Blanched veggies (peas, lettuce, spinach),
  3. Frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp and bloodworms (as occasional treats).

You can give them food in small portions once or twice a day. Overfeeding should be avoided as grazing fish may easily stress their digestive system and cause the water to get cloudy.
