Congo Tetra Fish Guide
The Congo Tetra (Phenacogrammus interruptus) is a dazzling freshwater fish known for its shimmering, rainbow-like body colors and long, flowing fins, especially in the males. It’s quite popular among fish hobbyists for its lively schooling behavior and striking appearance.
One unique feature: the male develops a tail fin with an elegant middle extension and white-edged fins, which make it stand out in a group.
Congo Tetra Origin
- The Congo Tetra comes from Africa—specifically, the central basin of the Congo River Basin in what is now the Democratic Republic of Congo.
- In the wild, they live in slow-moving rivers, pools, and tributaries, often with vegetation around and slightly murky or tannin-rich water.
Temperament
- Generally peaceful and schooling—these fish feel safe and display their best behavior when kept in a group.
- Because they are somewhat large compared to many tetras and have long fins, they can become stressed if kept with very aggressive or fin-nipping fish.
Congo Tetra Compatibility
Good tank mates:
- Other peaceful fish of similar size, such as:
- Neon Tetras
- Corydoras
- Rainbowfish
- Celestial Pearl Danio
- Ember Tetras
- Mollies
- Chili Rasbora
- Dwarf Cichlids (aka Apistogramma)
To avoid:
- Fin-nipping species (they may damage the long fins of Congo Tetras)
- Very small fish that could be stressed or compete poorly in a school of these
- Overly aggressive fish that chase or dominate them
Congo Tetra Price in India
- In India, a single Congo Tetra (imported size ~2.5″) is around ₹ 650.
- Pairs (male + female) sometimes at ~ ₹ 1,150 in Indian markets.

Fresh Water
PH Level
6 - 7.5
Tank Type
- Freshwater tropical fish
Congo Tetra Aquarium Size
- Minimum recommended for a small shoal: around 30+ gallons (≈ 120+ liters) for best results.
- Longer tanks (so the fish can swim more) are better than very deep or tall ones, because they are active swimmers.
Water Conditions
- Temperature range: ~ 24–27 °C (75–81 °F) is ideal.
- pH level: Slightly acidic to neutral: about 6.0 to 7.5.
- Water hardness (GH/KH): Moderate softness preferred, but fish will adapt. For example, GH ~3-18 °dGH reported.
Congo Tetra Environment Needs
- Plenty of open swimming space + scattered plants around edges/back.
- Substrate: Natural look—sand or fine gravel, maybe darker to highlight the fish’s colors.
- Lighting: Moderately low to moderate light, as too bright light may stress them or hide their colors.
- Decor: Some hiding places (plants, maybe driftwood) so the fish feel secure when schooling. But avoid cluttering the middle open space too much.

Congo Tetra Nutritional Guide
Avg Monthly Expenses
₹80 - ₹ 150
Diet Type
- Omnivore: They will eat a mix of meat-based foods and some plant/vegetable matter.
Congo Tetra Suitable Foods
- Quality flake or pellet food formulated for tropical fish.

- Occasionally, some vegetable content or micro-pellets with plant matter.
Feeding Frequency & Tips
- Feed once or twice a day, only as much as the fish can eat in a couple of minutes.
- Overfeeding can pollute the water, which these fish don’t like.
- A varied diet will help maintain their health and vibrant colors.
- Remove any uneaten food after feeding to preserve water quality.

Swim bladder issues
Like most aquarium fish, Congo Tetras are susceptible to many of the typical diseases, such as:
White Spot Disease (Ich)
The parasite makes little white spots appear on the body and fins. Infected fish may scratch surfaces or rub against them, swim in an erratic manner, and stop the action of eating. It is treated via raised water temperatures, anti-ich medications, and good water quality. As the Congo Tetra requires high water quality, it is often a water quality issue.
Fin Rot / Finned Damage
Fin damage may also occur due to sharp decorations, aggressive tankmates, or poor water conditions. This will be displayed by ragged fins, eroded edges, or areas that are becoming discolored. It is advisable to maintain good water conditions (by regular water changes), ensure peaceful tankmates, and consider antibacterial treatment if required.
Stress-Related Colour Fading & Hidden Behaviour
In less than ideal conditions (such as being overlit, not being shoaled, or in a tank that is too small or not with the right chemistry), the Congo Tetra may appear: to lose its colors, be less active, to hide more, or to be more prone to disease, however good stable water, keeping a school and providing a comfortable environment will help.
Congo Tetra General Health Tips
- They thrive in groups containing 6 to 8 members. Natural behaviors are seen in those groups.
- Change water each week or two and test for ammonia, for nitrite, and for nitrate.
- Isolate new fish to lessen disease spread.
- Moderate light, with a calm and steady environment, and a good diet are sufficient to maintain the colors and fins of these fish.
