The False Bandit Corydoras (Corydoras melini) is a compact, peaceful catfish species popular among community‐aquarium hobbyists. It is also known as Melini cory, false bandit cory hoplisoma melini, & false bandit catfish. The catfish is native to the upper Rio Negro and Meta River basins in Brazil and Colombia.

It favours soft sandy substrate, subdued lighting and a shoaling lifestyle. With its distinctive “bandit mask” stripe across the eye and lower lobe of the caudal fin, the False Bandit adds both charm and function to the bottom of your tank. In a well‐set aquarium, it moves from hiding spots and actively scavenges, helping keep the substrate clean.

If you’re looking for a peaceful, active and bottom‐dwelling fish for a planted community setup, this species is a strong choice.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many False Bandit Corydoras should I keep together?

At least 5–8 individuals are recommended to satisfy their social schooling nature.

Can I keep False bandit corydoras fish with shrimp or snails?

Yes, in general, with caution. They are very peaceful and won’t harm healthy shrimp/snails, but ensure the shrimp are not so large or aggressive that they disturb the Corydoras, and the substrate is safe for the fish.

What substrate is best for False Bandit Corydoras?

A soft sand or very smooth fine gravel is ideal. Rough substrates can damage their barbels and cause health issues.

How can I trigger breeding in False Bandit Corydoras?

You can stimulate spawning by performing cooler water changes, slightly lowering pH/softening water, and feeding richer live/frozen foods to condition the fish. Eggs are sticky and laid on decor or glass.

What diseases should I watch for with this species?

Typical issues include barbel erosion (often due to bad substrate or poor water quality), stress from incompatible tankmates or overcrowding, and general infections if water parameters are unstable. Regular monitoring of substrate and water quality is key.
