The Kissing Gourami (Helostoma temminckii) is one large, strange freshwater fish that is primarily in the news for the "kissing" itself, which is when two fish head butt mouth to mouth. More-principled than it sounds, this is actually more of a territorial ceremony than a sign of love.

Kissing Gouramis are silvery white to pale pink and have darkening pink color as they grow old. They are quiet but very large, thus suitable for medium and large aquariums.

Origin of the Kissing Gourami

Southeast Asians, Malaysians, Thais, and Indonesians, Kissing Gouramis prefer to occupy slow streams, ponds, and lakes with heavy cover. They owe a debt to their homewaters for the fact that they require soft, weakly acidic water and huge amounts of cover places.

Temperament of the Kissing Gourami

Outgoing and friendly in nature, Kissing Gouramis are, but their mouth-to-mouth "kissing" sometimes is really a dominance display.

  1. They will have to be kept in groups of 3–5 to prevent aggression.
  2. Breed or feeding areas will be defended by adult males but are not likely to get harmed.
  3. They will remain for the most part mid to near the surface of the tank.

Kissing Gourami Tank Mates with Other Fish

Other peaceful fish will suit as tankmates:

  1. Silver Dollars
  2. Other tanks of similar size Gourami species
  3. Rainbowfish
  4. Tetras

Aggressive or fin nippy species that will be bullied, like Neon Tetras or small Barbs, should be avoided.

Price Range of the Kissing Gourami

Kissing Gouramis are inexpensive and easily found. Price is usually about ₹500–₹1,000 ($6–12) based on size and age. Large mature ones will be a bit pricier.
