Lined Butterfly Fish Guide
The Lined Butterflyfish (scientific name Chaetodon lineolatus) is a bright, beautiful marine fish. It has a white body with many thin black lines, plus a bold black band near its tail. The fins and tail often show yellow hues. It is one of the larger butterflyfishes in its genus.
This fish is popular among advanced marine aquarium keepers, though it is not easy to care for because of its special needs.
Lined Butterfly fish Origin
- The Lined Butterflyfish belongs to the butterflyfish family Chaetodontidae.
- It lives in the Indo-Pacific region, from the Red Sea and East Africa, across the Indian Ocean, to parts of Australia, southern Japan, and Hawaii.
- In the wild, it is seen in coral reefs and lagoons, usually in areas rich in coral.
Temperament
- The Lined Butterflyfish is territorial and can become somewhat aggressive toward fish that invade its space.
- It often lives in pairs in nature.
- Because it has a strong preference for coral polyps and small invertebrates, it may “nibble” on coral or sensitive animals in an aquarium. So it is not considered fully “reef safe.”
Compatibility
- It can cohabit with larger, robust marine species that don’t get too close to its feeding area, once it is well settled.
- Avoid keeping it with small, delicate fish or reef corals and invertebrates that it might eat (like anemones or fragile corals).
- Do not keep multiple fish of very similar appearance in the same tank, unless you have a huge space, as that may lead to conflict.
Lined Butterflyfish Price Range
In India, the Lined Butterflyfish has a cost of about ₹1,050 online. This one is less affordable than many others. However, the cost may change according to fish size. The price hinges also on availability as well as the seller’s location.

Lined Butterflyfish Tank Type
- Saltwater (marine) tank only
- Not suitable for brackish or freshwater systems
Aquarium Size
- Needs a very large tank, which is a minimum of 700 liters (≈ 185 gallons)
- Many hobbyists say one specimen should get solo space to roam.
Water Conditions
- Temperature: 23 °C to 27 °C
- pH: 8.2–8.4
- Water hardness (salinity/general hardness): Should match typical reef seawater (around 35 ppt salinity, stable marine hardness).
- It lives naturally from a depth of 2 m to 171 m, though more often under ~30 m depth.
Environment Needs
- Lots of live rock for hiding and grazing
- An open swimming space is essential — it is for active swimmers.
- Good flow and water quality to mimic its reef habitat
- Because it may eat or damage corals, anemones, or small invertebrates, such items should be used carefully or avoided.

Lined Butterflyfish Diet Type
- It is omnivorous, even though it leans toward both coral and some small invertebrates.
Suitable Foods
- Coral polyps and small anemones (in nature)
- Small algae, zooplankton, crustaceans, and invertebrates
- In an aquarium: frozen or live brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, zooplankton, micro-algae (e.g. spirulina), etc.
Feeding Frequency & Tips
- Offer tiny portions many times each day, not one large meal.
- You can gradually introduce substitutes that are frozen, live, or prepared, so it learns to eat in captivity with foods it likes at first.
- Ensure it does not starve in the early days since new food is often hardest to accept.
