Introduction of the Royal Gramma
The Royal Gramma (Gramma loreto) is a tiny, brightly hued sea fish prized for its beautiful purple forehead that becomes yellow towards the tail. Peaceful and lovely to behold, it is a popular choice for reef tanks.
Males are slightly larger and can show brighter color, females are smaller and more rounded. Royal Gramma is a semi-aggressive, inquisitive, interactive fish, frequently looking out from under crevices and flowing elegantly through the aquarium. Their bright color and miniature size make them an ideal fish for new and experienced marine aquarists as well.
Origin of the Royal Gramma
Royal Grammas occur naturally in the tropical western Atlantic Ocean, specifically in the Caribbean Sea, Bahamas, and Florida reefs. They live in crevices of coral and rock crevices at a depth of 1–60 meters. In the wild, they consume zooplankton and small invertebrates, and are extremely territorial in their chosen hiding places. Royal Grammas bred in captivity are now widely distributed, so hobbyists can enjoy them without impacting wild populations.
Temperament of the Royal Gramma
Royal Grammas are calm but semi-aggressive. They protect zones around refuges and will chase other small fish entering their space but hardly attack big ones. With their easy gliding motion and inquisitive nature, they are a very active species. They are perfectly suited for peaceful species community reef aquariums.
Royal Gramma Compatibility with Other Fish
Royal Grammas are compatible with other peaceful marine species. Suitable tankmates are:
- Clownfish and gobies
- Tangs and wrasses
- Other small, docile fish
Do not house them with excessively aggressive fish or large predators since Royal Grammas become stressed. Providing them with live rock or coral crevices makes them feel secure and be able to defend territories.
Price Range of the Royal Gramma
Royal Grammas are inexpensive and reasonably typical. They range from ₹1,200 to ₹2,500 (US $15–35), depending on size, age, and wild-caught or captive-bred. Owing to their size, most aquarists only have one or two in reef aquariums to provide splashes of color without overcrowding.
