Introduction of the Ryukin Goldfish
Ryukin Goldfish (Carassius auratus) is one of the most well-known fancy goldfish types with the hump on the back of the head, rounded short body form, and flowing tail fins. The fish is from Japan and is a regal but active fish that all aquarists enjoy bringing personality and color to their aquariums.
Ryukins come in a range of colors — red, white, calico, orange, and metallic too — and their active swimming personality makes them a joy to observe. Though they are robust and tough, they must be properly maintained so that they do not suffer from swim bladder issues and get stressed by their compact body length.
Origin of the Ryukin Goldfish
The Ryukin Goldfish is native to Japan and found its way to be rumored to have been bred from Chinese Fantail Goldfish in the later half of the 18th century. The name "Ryukin" was given because the fish had been alleged to have been imported from the Ryukyu Islands to Japan.
The selective breeding has produced long-finned and short-finned forms, both of which are of great value for their hump and dignified carriage.
Temperament of the Ryukin Goldfish
Ryukins are energetic, curious, and slightly territorial on occasion. They are more energetic than most other fancy goldfish types and tend to nip fins from time to time, usually at feeding or breeding time.
They coexist amicably with an abundance of space and with suitable tankmates. Their very lively nature makes them fascinating and compelling to observe, especially when kept in groups.
Ryukin Goldfish Compatibility with Other Fish
Ryukins should be kept with other fancy goldfish of similar body size and swimming ability. Never house them with long-bodied or streamlined varieties, who may rival them for food.
Recommended tankmates:
- Oranda Goldfish
- Ranchu Goldfish
- Fantail Goldfish
- Telescope Goldfish
- Black Moor Goldfish
Do not keep them with aggressive or tropical fishes which live in warm water.
Price Range of the Ryukin Goldfish
The price of a Ryukin Goldfish varies according to fin type, color, and size. They are priced between ₹200 and ₹900 ($3–$11) in India. Long-finned or imported varieties, being less common, are priced higher.
