One of the most lovely and engaging freshwater aquarium fish is the Sailfin Molly (Poecilia latipinna). Best known for its tall, impressive dorsal fin, which is pulled out wide like a sail, this fish brings action and sophistication to any aquarium.

Sailfin Mollies are active, tranquil swimmers and exist in a range of colours including silver, orange, and marble. Sailfin Mollies are also one of the most tolerant freshwater creatures and are able to survive both in fresh water and slightly brackish water.

Origin of the Sailfin Molly

Naturally occurring in Florida and along the Gulf of Mexico coast in Central and North America, Sailfin Molly thrives in warm, sluggish environments like marshes, swamps, and rivers along the coast. Their tolerance to fluctuating salinity made them a favorite among aquarists worldwide.

Sailfin Molly's Temperament

Peaceful and outgoing Sailfin Mollies thrive wonderfully well in community aquariums. They are very active and always swimming and enjoy showing off their stunning dorsal fins — especially the males when courting or just being goofy.

Males are quite territorial and thus keep one per two or three females to reduce stress and fin-nipping.

Sailfin Molly Compatibility with Other Fish

Sailfin Mollies will do excellently well in the company of other docile tankmates in community aquariums. A suitable tankmate is:

  1. Guppies
  2. Swordtails
  3. Corydoras catfish
  4. Harlequin rasboras
  5. Dwarf gouramis
  6. Tetras

Do not stock fin-nipping or nippy fish like tiger barbs or big cichlids, who will destroy the Sailfin Molly's fragile fins.

Price Range of the Sailfin Molly

Sailfin Mollies are cheap and plentiful. They are between ₹150–₹300 ($2–$4) depending on size, coloration, and finnage. Fancy Sailfin Mollies such as gold dust or marble will be more expensive.
