Squareback Anthias is scientifically called Pseudanthias pleurotaenia. The males of this species have a vibrant pinkish-orange with a distinctive pinkish-purple square on their backs, while females are yellow with purple accents. The fish is also known as Squarespot Anthias, Pink Square Anthias, Mirror Basslet, or Squarespot Fairy Basslet and is larger in size as compared to other Anthias.

They are native to the coral reefs of the Pacific Ocean. Males Squareback Anthais display a distinct purplish-square blotch on their sides, while females have a subtle tone. The fish adds vibrancy and life to the aquarium.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I keep more than one male Squareback Anthias in a tank?

No. They are best kept with one male and multiple females. Multiple males often fight or one will dominate.

How often should Squareback Anthias be fed?

Multiple times per day in small portions because of their high metabolic rate.

Are Squareback Anthias reefs safe?

Yes. Generally reef safe with corals and invertebrates. They do best in reef setups with live rock, plenty of hiding spaces.

How can you identify a male Squareback Anthias?

A male Squareback Anthias is larger, brightly colored, and has the distinct purple-to-lavender square blotch on its side, which gives the species its name. Males also tend to display more vibrant pinkish-orange hues overall.

Can female Squareback Anthias turn into males?

Yes. Squareback Anthias are protogynous hermaphrodites, meaning a dominant female can transition into a male if the existing male is removed. This change is both behavioural and physical, including the appearance of the purple square patch.

Where can I find Squareback Anthias for sale?

Squareback Anthias are available at reputable aquarium retailers and trusted online marine fish stores.
