Zebra Loach (Botia striata) is one of those "dramatic" and "spectacular" freshwater fishes that were named so because of their striped white and black color. They inhabit India and are bottom-loaches, non-aggressive scavengers who add their charm and utility in aquariums by eradicating snail infestations. Its friendly nature, small size, and active behavior make it eligible to be a wonderful community tank addition.

Origin of the Zebra Loach

Zebra Loaches live in clear, fast-moving streams of the Indian Western Ghats. They will only thrive under well-oxygenated, slight to neutral waters and sandy or fine gravel substrates in nature. They are a plant and small crustacean and insect larvae feeder in nature.

Temperament of the Zebra Loach

Social, schooling, and playful Zebra Loaches prefer to be kept in a shoal of 5–6 or more. Individuals that are solitary are shy but active and dominant in a shoal. Bottom-dwellers, they monopolize much foraging time, and some harmless chasing every now and then occurs.

Zebra Loach Compatibility with Other Fish

Zebra Loaches are perfect community fish and can be kept with:

  1. Tetras, rasboras, danios
  2. Corydoras catfish
  3. Gouramis and peaceful barbs
  4. Other loaches such as Kuhli or Yoyo Loach

Don't keep with:

  1. Large territorial cichlids
  2. Finny, slow fish (will occasionally nibble)
  3. Very small fry (will be consumed)

Price Range of the Zebra Loach

Zebra Loaches are inexpensive and typically range from ₹250–₹700 ($3–$8) depending on quantity and size. Their very small size and graphic stripes make them very popular among aquarium hobbyists.
