The Australian Mist was the initial pedigreed cat created completely in Australia. It was developed back in 1977 by Dr. Truda Straede and is a hybrid breed of Burmese, Abyssinian, and Australian domestic shorthair cats.

The breed was initially called the Spotted Mist but changed to the Australian Mist in 1998 when the marbled pattern was coined. The International Cat Association recognised it in 2014, and the Governing Council of the Cat Fancy in the UK in 2017.
