Introduction to Havana Brown Cat Breed

Havana Brown cat breed is a medium-sized, affectionate breed that is known for its amiable, and playful temperament. They are best suited for families and can get along with people of all ages. Let us learn more about their origin and history in our next section.

Origin & History of Havana Brown Cat Breed

The Havana Brown was created in the 1950s in England by crossing Siamese and domestic black cats, with early breeders also introducing a Russian Blue. However, genetic testing shows that Russian Blue genes are no longer present in the breed.

Similar brown cats, known as Swiss Mountain Cats, appeared in Europe in the 1890s but disappeared after World War II, likely due to discouragement from the Siamese Cat Club of Britain. While the Swiss Mountain Cat wasn’t part of the Havana Brown’s breeding program, both likely share Siamese genetics.

What is the price of a Havana Brown Cat?

Cost of buying

₹ 20,000 - ₹ 50,000

The average Havana Brown Cat  price can vary from ₹ 20,000 to ₹ 50,000 in India. The cost depends on factors like breed, lineage, and health conditions. Several factors should be considered while purchasing a Havana Brown Cat -

  • The most essential thing when purchasing a pet is choosing a trustworthy breeder. Ensure that any breeder treats the cats appropriately and follows the moral breeding procedure.
  • Ask your breeder to provide health certificates and lineage papers to ensure that the cat is healthy and purebred. Visit the establishments where they breed to confirm that there is no inbreeding taking place.
  • The cost depends on many variables like ancestry, the possibility of show quality, and the breeder's reputation.

Adopt

There is another way to get a cat home, i.e., to adopt

  • Give a homeless pet all the love with adoption. Maybe breed-specific rescues, a local animal shelter, or other rescue groups have a cat/kitten up for adoption.
  • Adoption fees usually cover vaccinations, spaying/neutering, and initial medical care. These fees vary, but they are generally lower than they would be to buy from a breeder.

Are you ready to get a Havana Brown Cat home?

Research: Do thorough research about the breed, its requirements, health issues,  temperaments, traits, and compatibility. See if the cat breed is a good fit for your lifestyle.

Find reputable sources: Before buying a cat, look for a trustworthy breeder who practices ethical breeding. Also, check out the local rescues or shelters if you are planning to adopt.

Visit breeding establishments/adoption centers: Make a plan to visit the breeding establishments or adoption centers before going to buy or adopt the cat. Know about their behavior, health, immunization, history, and lineage.

Ask for documentation: Do not miss the health certification, vaccination record, and any other related documents from the breeder before buying the kitten. If you are adopting, make sure you inquire about the behavior and past and recent health conditions.

Prepare your home: You must make a comfortable living space for the cat before bringing it into your life. So, make sure you are well aware of the requirements, such as space, time, and commitment, needed to have a cat at home. Ensure you have enough supplies, grooming tools, a bed, a food bowl, and other necessities.

Some common health issues found in Havana Brown cats

Havana Brown Cats are a relatively healthy breed, however, they are prone to some common health issues. Like-

  • Obesity: All cats are at risk of overeating or not getting enough exercise, which can lead to weight gain and obesity. It’s important to talk to your vet about your cat’s ideal caloric intake and what a healthy body condition looks like. Extra weight can cause various health problems, such as heart disease, diabetes, pancreatitis, and joint issues like hip dysplasia.
  • Dental Disease: Periodontal disease is common in cats and begins when food particles turn into plaque, leading to gum infections. To prevent this, brush your cat's teeth with cat-safe toothpaste and schedule regular vet checkups. Professional dental cleanings under anesthesia are typically recommended every one to two years.
