Introduction to the Russian White

The Russian White cat was created in 1971 in Australia after a white Siberian cat was cross-bred with a Russian Blue male cat named Myemgay Yuri. Among the litter, a female kitten called White Rose was the basis of the Russian White breed.

Four generations later, after selective mating, the breed was finally acknowledged in 1975 in Australia. The United Kingdom started a similar programme in the 1960s, and the Russian White became a world-renowned but nevertheless rare breed.

Adults (1–7 Years): Adult cats should have up to 3 to 4 servings of food per 5 pounds of body weight to sustain a healthy weight. A typical adult 8-pound cat should consume an average of 200 calories each day.

Seniors (8+ Years): Switch to senior cat food with joint support ingredients and easy-to-digest ingredients. Reduce the portion size to their low metabolic rate and less activity.

Common Health Problems of Russian Whites

  1. Bladder stones – Can be controlled through an appropriate diet and hydration. The risk can be minimised with wet food and clean water.
  2. Diabetes – Can appear when they are overweight. Prevention depends on a balanced diet and frequent exercise.
  3. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy – possible due to their Russian Blue lineage. Early signs can be detected with a regular vet checkup.

General Healthcare Tips for Russian Whites

  1. Vet check-ups every 6 to 12 months. These assist in the early detection of health problems and keeping up with shots.
  2. Brushing and yearly dental checkups. Keeping the mouth clean prevents gum disease and tooth loss.
  3. Wet food or water fountains should be encouraged. Body hydration promotes the health of the kidneys and the urinary tract.
  4. Be consistent to lessen the stress. Cats are more comfortable when they have regular routines.
  5. Monitor the weight to avoid obesity problems. Being overweight may cause joint problems, diabetes, and heart disease.

Senior Russian White Care

Older cats need extra help:

  1. Install ramps or stairs to favourite places. This prevents older cats from jumping and straining their joints.
  2. Place litter boxes on low sides. It simplifies the process of toileting among cats with reduced mobility.
  3. Switch to senior food with glucosamine. It helps promote joint health and fulfils the nutritional needs associated with ageing.
  4. Visits to the vet at a 6-month interval. Age-related problems are detected early with regular check-ups.
  5. Soft, warm beds assist in joint comfort. They help in relieving stiffness and enable good sleep.
