Rusty-Spotted Cat (Prionailurus rubiginosus) is the smallest wild cat in the world and is found in India, Sri Lanka, and recently it has also been identified in Nepal. In 1831, Isidore Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire initially wrote about this elusive feline, which, because of its diminutive stature and quick movements, has come to be known as the hummingbird of the cat family.
Officially,t hree subspecies are recognised:
- P. r. rubiginosus – Found in India and Nepal
- P. r. phillipsi – Native to Sri Lanka’s Wet Forest Zone
- P. r. koladivius – Found in Sri Lanka’s dry lowlands
At this time, the IUCN Red List includes them as Near Threatened, citing habitat degradation and the fact that they have a small range.
