Introduction to the English Springer Spaniel Breed

The English Springer Spaniel is an active and devoted breed that makes excellent companions and a good hunting dog. This breed came from the British Isles and was historically used by hunters to help with "springing" game from hiding spots, giving them their name.

The English Springer Spaniel was originally bred alongside the Cocker Spaniel, with Cockers being the smaller puppies in the litter and Springers being the larger puppies. As hunting styles changed, Springers evolved as flushing and retrieving dogs.

By the early 1900s, the breed was introduced to America and became favoured in both fieldwork and show competitions.

Over time, the breed was split up into two lines, the English Springer Spaniel bred as a field dog in the English hunting tradition and as an agile hunter, and the English Springer Spaniel bred as a show dog for confirmation.

Today they are treasured for their intelligence, their agility, and their affectionate nature.

English Springer Spaniel Grooming Routine:

  • To reduce tangles and mats, brush at least twice a week. Use a soft brush to keep their coat in good shape and also spread natural oils.
