Introduction to the Portuguese Sheepdog
Portuguese Sheepdog or Cão da Serra de Aires is a rare, high-energy working breed that originated in southern Portugal, in the Alentejo, in the early part of the 20th century. The shaggy, goat like coat and monkey-like expression have given it the name monkey dog.
This breed was originally developed by a cross between Briards and Pyrenean shepherds, and they were very good at handling large flocks of sheep across rugged land.
It was accepted by the Portuguese Canicultural Club in 1932 and the FCI in 1996 (FCI Standard No. 93).

Common Health Problems of Portuguese Sheepdogs
For active herding breeds like these, annual and preventive care is very important.
- Hip and Elbow Dysplasia – It's best to keep them lean and go for OFA screening. Early detection and weight control are two ways to help them reduce stress.
- Eye Conditions (PRA, cataracts) – An eye screening two times a year is recommended. Periodical examination can maintain eyesight and detect problems at an early stage.
- Tick-borne illnesses – Ehrlichiosis and babesiosis are risks in endemic zones. Use monthly preventatives and check for ticks every day.
- Gastric Sensitivity – It's always important to take precautions to avoid bloating. It's best to feed smaller meals and avoid exercise around feeding time.
General Healthcare Tips
- X-rays of the hip/elbows each year. Assists in identifying the early presence of dysplasia in at-risk breeds.
- Every 2 years, CERF eye checkups. Monitors inherited eye problems before they deteriorate.
- Check ticks monthly, especially in the months from April to October. Active, outdoor breeds are prone to tick-borne illness.
- To reduce bloat, avoid exercise around their mealtime. It helps prevent life-threatening gastric torsion.
- Provide them with slow-feeder bowls, as it helps reduce gulping. It encourages slow eating and lowers the risk of digestive issues.

Senior Portuguese Sheepdog Care
- Senior food containing EPA/DHA (200 mg/10 kg), vitamin D, and phosphatidylcholine. Such nutrients will sustain joint health, brain health, and vitality in older pets.
- Twice annually, vet checks and ultrasounds of the belly are performed to examine tumours. Periodic check-ups allow the detection of health risks at an earlier stage and treat them more effectively.
- Gentle daily activity: Light swimming, scent games and hill walks. Such low-intensity activities keep the elderly physically fit, tone muscles, and promote mental health.
