Slovensky Cuvac is a noble and protective herding dog breed that originated in the mountains of Slovakia. This breed was developed centuries ago to guard the flock against wolves and bears, and the breed is the descendant of the arctic wolf and has been a friend to shepherds.
By the mid-20th century, the breed had become on the verge of extinction because of agricultural reforms and predator control. Luckily, in the 1960s, the breed was revived by a restoration campaign headed by Dr. Antonin Hruza.
It was recognised by FCI in 1965 and is a national treasure of Slovakia.
