Introduction to the Sussex Spaniel

The Sussex Spaniel is a rare, low drive sporting dog with their distinct golden liver coat, and their sweet nature.

Developed by Augustus Elliott Fuller in the late 18th century in Sussex County in England, the breed was used to flush game birds in heavy cover. The breed was one of the initial ten breeds that were recognised by the AKC in 1884.

The Sussex spaniel almost became extinct during World War II and was resurrected by the relentless work of Joy Freer. It is one of the rarest spaniels in the world today, although it was saved.

Common Health Problems of Sussex Spaniels

Regular vet care and preventive health strategies can help Sussex Spaniels thrive. However, Sussex Spaniels are prone to some common health conditions like:

  1. Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD): Considering their long back and short legs. To avoid strain on the spine, avoid jumping and use ramps.
  2. Hip Dysplasia: A Malformed hip joint is prevalent in the breed. It can be controlled through regular exercise and supplements for joints.
  3. Ear Infections: They have heavy, pendant ears that trap a lot of moisture. It's best to weekly clean their ears.
  4. Pulmonic Stenosis & PDA: These are congenital heart conditions. To maintain a healthy heart, it's best to do regular vet screening.
  5. Obesity: This is mainly caused by low activity levels. A way to fight this is by giving them a controlled diet along with daily light exercises.

General Healthcare Tips for Sussex Spaniels

  1. Hip and spine checks – Particularly the puppies and the seniors. Monitoring at an early stage allows revealing and controlling possible problems.
  2. Weekly ear cleaning – To avoid infection. Their droopy ears retain moisture, and hence, it is necessary to take good care of them frequently.
  3. Joint supplements – To ease inflammation and stiffness. Chondroitin and glucosamine keep mobility on hand.
  4. Weight management – Control portions and exercise every day. Prevents pressure on their back and joints.
  5. Avoid high jumps – Guard their backs against injury. Access furniture by use of ramp or steps.
