Belgian Shepherd

There are four types of Belgian shepherds. The body shape is the same but the coats are different. This breed has a long black coat. The Tervuren has a fawn or grey long coat. The Malinois is a fawn-coated dog with a black mask. Laekenois has a rough, fawn coat with black trace.

Belgian Shepherds are smart, loyal and protective. They have very strong bonds with their family. They can be good with children if socialised early. They can be stubborn and should be trained firmly and consistently. These dogs need an experienced owner who knows what they need.

Belgian Shepherds are very energetic. Each day, they require 60 to 90 minutes of exercise. Being bred to work, they need both physical and mental stimulation. They can get bored and destructive without exercise. They love running, swimming and playing fetch.

Belgian Shepherds get along well with other pets. However, their herding instincts may lead them to chase smaller animals. Early socialization helps set them up with cats or small pets. Always keep an eye on their interactions with other animals.

Belgian Shepherds have a double coat that needs regular grooming. Brush them often to remove loose hair and dirt. It helps prevent tangles and matting. Bathe them when needed, every two to three months. Their coat is not high maintenance, but regular care is needed to keep them comfortable.
