For generations, Brazil’s caramel-colored street dogs, affectionately known as "vira-lata caramelo" (literally: caramel trashcan-tipper), have roamed the streets, often ignored and left to fend for themselves. But today, these resilient dogs are capturing the hearts of a nation and becoming cultural icons.
Caramelos have surged to prominence through memes, viral videos, and even petitions advocating their recognition as a symbol of Brazilian culture. Their rise reflects a deep cultural shift, celebrating resilience, diversity, and the indomitable spirit of the Brazilian people.
Netflix’s upcoming film Caramelo is poised to cement the caramelo’s status as a national treasure. Directed by Diego Freitas, the film follows a stray caramel-colored dog navigating the chaotic streets of São Paulo. Freitas describes the caramelo as “the spirit of our time,” embodying survival and charm in a way that resonates deeply with Brazil’s melting-pot identity.
The film is just the beginning. Rio de Janeiro’s iconic Carnival parade in 2025 will spotlight caramelos with extravagant costumes, while legislation is being drafted to honor them as part of Brazil’s cultural heritage.
The caramelo’s journey into the spotlight began online around 2019. Social media celebrated their quirks, with viral moments like a caramelo interrupting a dance show or feigning death during a CPR demonstration. Soon, their images adorned pillows and memes declaring, “This represents Brazil more than soccer or samba.”
Petitions followed, including a movement to feature the caramelo on Brazilian currency. One 2019 campaign to replace the macaw on the 10-reais bill drew 50,000 signatures. Another petition to add the dog to the 200-reais note gained even more traction.
Caramelos are loved not just for their antics but for their savvy survival skills. Take Persistent José, a stray in João Pessoa, who charmed his way into a home by guiding his chosen adopters to their building and walking straight inside. Stories like José’s echo the broader Brazilian spirit: resourceful, persistent, and unyielding.
Historically, caramelos have even shown heroism. Bruto, a caramel-colored dog from the 19th century, joined Brazilian troops in the Paraguayan War, alerting them to danger and saving lives. Today, his taxidermied form resides in a Rio de Janeiro police museum as a testament to loyalty and courage.
Despite the newfound adoration, caramelos still face struggles. Shelters across Brazil report that caramel-colored dogs are often overlooked for adoption in favor of smaller or fluffier breeds. Rosana Guerra, president of Indefesos shelter in Rio, laments that caramelo puppies are usually picked last, leaving many to grow up in shelters.
“It’s heartbreaking,” she says. “They are incredible animals, yet so many remain without homes.”
The spotlight on caramelos is driving change. Many hope Netflix’s Caramelo will inspire more adoptions and raise awareness about stray dogs. Of the dogs featured in the film, six have already been adopted by crew members.
The caramelo, once overlooked, is now a symbol of Brazil’s heart and soul. As their story unfolds on screens and streets, these dogs remind us of the beauty in resilience and the joy in embracing life’s imperfections.
