Chandigarh to Launch Pilot Project Using AI and Microchips to Address Stray Dog Issue

The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation is set to initiate a pioneering pilot project aimed at managing the city’s stray dog population through advanced technology. This innovative project will leverage artificial intelligence (AI) and microchip implants to monitor and track stray dogs.

The initiative will see microchips implanted around the necks of stray dogs, enabling civic officials to map, track, and conduct a comprehensive census of the stray dog population within city limits. These technologies will provide detailed information about each dog, including vaccination status, sterilization, and location.

"There will be a concerted effort to synchronize both the microchip and AI-based technologies for optimal results," said an official. The pilot will focus on areas with high concentrations of stray dogs, such as Manimajra, Modern Housing Complex-Notified Area Committee, and Maloya. If successful, the project will be expanded citywide.

"The AI mapping of stray dogs will involve capturing lateral and front views of the dogs, processed by AI-based software accessible through a mobile app," explained an official. Civic officials will be able to gather all necessary information without physically scanning the dogs, thanks to this AI-based system.

This forward-thinking approach marks a significant step towards addressing the stray dog issue in Chandigarh, potentially serving as a model for other cities facing similar challenges.
