The world's tallest male dog, a Great Dane from Iowa named Kevin, has passed away unexpectedly, leaving his owners to lament that humans "never [have] enough time" with such magnificent pets. Kevin, recognized by Guinness World Records in March as the tallest dog globally, was just three years old.
According to a statement from Guinness World Records on Monday, Kevin fell ill and underwent an unplanned surgery, which he did not survive. His co-owners, Tracy and Roger Wolfe, expressed their devastation in a heartfelt message, describing Kevin as "the best giant boy" and expressing gratitude for the attention he received after breaking the record.
Standing at 3ft 2in (0.97 meters) from his feet to his withers, Kevin was about the same height as many toddlers and 8 inches taller than the average male Great Dane. He claimed the title of the world's tallest living male dog after the previous record-holder, another American Great Dane named Zeus, passed away six months earlier. Zeus, also three at the time of his death, measured 3ft 5.18in (1.046 meters) and succumbed to pneumonia following an amputation due to bone cancer.
In an interview published on 13 June, the Wolfes shared anecdotes about Kevin's life at their home in West Des Moines, Iowa, which he shared with the couple, their two young children, and a variety of other animals, including dogs, cats, chickens, goats, and horses.
Despite his imposing size, Kevin was known for his fear of the household vacuum cleaner, which he wouldn't let come within six feet of him. Tracy Wolfe affectionately called him a "big baby," noting his tendency to jump and run away from the vacuum.
Kevin's nervousness was also evident when he accompanied the Wolfes' son to his first training class at the youth development organization 4-H, where he became so overwhelmed that he soiled himself in the middle of the session.
Despite his skittish nature, Kevin was a gentle giant who could eat up to 10 cups of food daily while maintaining a lean physique. He was notorious for stealing food from kitchen counters, which he could easily reach without even standing on his hind legs.
Reflecting on Kevin's life, Tracy Wolfe remarked, "Kevin is just the epitome of a gentle giant. He was … just perfect for us." The loss of Kevin has left a profound void in the Wolfe family, who cherished their time with their beloved pet.
