Betta fish, also known as "Fighter Fish" in India, have become increasingly popular pets in our homes. While they're readily available at local aquarium shops and even weekly markets, many Indian fish keepers make common mistakes in their care. Here's your essential guide to keeping these beautiful fish healthy in Indian conditions.
Many Indian pet shops sell bettas in small bowls or containers, claiming they need minimal space. This is incorrect! Your betta needs at least 18 litres (5 gallons) of water to thrive. Small containers are especially problematic in our tropical climate, where water quality deteriorates quickly. A proper-sized tank also allows space for enrichment and helps maintain stable water parameters during our hot summers.
Despite our warm climate, temperature control is crucial. During winter months in North India, or in air-conditioned rooms, a heater becomes necessary to maintain the ideal temperature of 24-27°C (76-81°F). A filter is absolutely essential - don't believe local myths about bettas preferring stagnant water! In India's dust-prone environment, a good filter helps keep the water clean and healthy.
Live plants like Amazon Sword and Water Wisteria, easily available in Indian aquarium shops, are excellent additions to your betta tank. These plants thrive in our climate and provide natural resting spots. If you prefer artificial options, choose silk plants available at most pet stores - they're safer than plastic ones for your betta's delicate fins. Local materials like coconut shells (properly cleaned) can make excellent hiding spots!
In India, bettas are often marketed as fighting fish, and there's a good reason for this name. These fish are territorial and must be kept alone. Don't be tempted by suggestions to keep male and female bettas together, or to add other fish. While some experienced aquarists might successfully keep bettas in community tanks, beginners should maintain them separately.
Our tropical climate means bettas are quite active, and yes, they can jump! Use a proper tank cover to prevent escapes. During monsoon season, when humidity is high, ensure proper ventilation while maintaining coverage. If you're using local materials for covers, ensure they're non-toxic and won't rust.
Whether you're a beginner or experienced fish keeper, proper betta care in Indian conditions requires attention to these details. By avoiding these common mistakes, you can ensure your betta lives a healthy, happy life in your home aquarium.
Remember, while bettas are relatively hardy fish, they deserve the same care and attention as any other pet. With proper setup and maintenance, your betta can thrive in Indian conditions and bring years of joy to your home.
