Ever wondered what’s going on inside your fish tank? Are those little guys just swimming around aimlessly, or is there something more to their daily laps? Surprisingly, fish might have more going on than we give them credit for! It turns out, they might even have friends—or at least something that looks a lot like friendship.

Fishy Friendships: Fact or Fish-tale?

Most people think fish have two moods: swim or hide. But let’s not underestimate our finned friends. Fish come in over 34,000 species, with personalities as colorful as their scales! Some are loners, like the moody betta fish, who would rather puff up than play nice. Others, like guppies or tetras, are social butterflies that love hanging out in groups—shoals or schools, to use the fancy terms.

Research shows that some fish, like guppies and cichlids, can recognize and remember individual members of their group. This ability to recognize others is a key sign of social intelligence, raising the question: can fish form bonds resembling friendships?

Several studies suggest that fish form social bonds that go beyond mere survival. For example, goby fish and shrimp have been observed working together to build and maintain burrows. The goby is like the shrimp's bodyguard, keeping an eye out for trouble while the shrimp digs out a cozy burrow. If a predator shows up, the goby signals the shrimp, and they both dash to safety.

Cleaner fish offers another fascinating example. These fish provide a service by eating parasites off larger fish. Remarkably, they seem to build "client" relationships, giving better service to certain fish to encourage repeat visits. They have even been observed giving their clients a quick, gentle rub to build rapport—a kind of fish massage

Are They Really BFFs?

Now, are fish forming the best friendships? Maybe not quite like we do, but they certainly seem to remember who’s been nice—or not so nice. Cichlids, a type of freshwater fish, have been observed individual fish and prefer to associate with those they’ve had positive interactions with in the past. This recognition and preference indicate that fish may choose "friends" based on past experiences.

While this may not be friendship in the human sense, it demonstrates that fish can form positive social bonds and make decisions based on these interactions.

So, if you’re gazing into your tank and wondering, "Are my fish friends?"—they could be! Many aquarium fish, like guppies, tetras, and angelfish, seem to enjoy being in groups. Keeping these fish in groups can reduce their stress, make them happier, and bring out more natural behaviors.

However, not all fish are social. Betta fish, for example, are the loners of the fish world. Stick them with others, and they might start a tank war. So, it’s essential to know your fish’s personality before planning a tank party.

Conclusion

Understanding that fish have social lives (even if they’re a little less complicated than ours) can change how we care for them. It’s not just about throwing them in a tank with some colorful gravel; it’s about creating an environment where they can thrive. Maybe even make a buddy or two! So, do fish have friends? Maybe they’re not exchanging secrets or planning sleepovers, but they do have relationships that matter to them.
