Cane Corso

Quick Information

Cane Corso is a smart, assertive, noble- bearing and confident breed, originally from Italy. Their lineage goes back to ancient Roman times where the breed name is roughly translated in Latin as ‘Bodyguard dog '.

They were primarily bred for the purpose of guarding. Hence, they are also called ‘Cane Corso Italiano’ or ‘Italian Cane Corso’.

A Cane Corso is typically a working dog. They served as watchdogs, farm-hands and canine soldiers. They are muscular, versatile, and eager-to-please dog breeds. They are highly trainable and have protective instincts. They are loving dogs, especially with family. However, they need early socialization, consistent leadership and mental stimulation to prevent loneliness.

  • A Cane Corso is a relatively large breed and needs a well-balanced diet to support their muscular build and activities. They require high-quality dog food to meet their nutrient needs as recommended by AAFCO for different stages of development like puppy, adult and senior ages.
  • Their diet should contain proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals. You can feed them dog-safe chicken, meat, vegetables and fruits to meet all the nutrient requirements.
  • Feeding them healthy amino acids and fats is essential for their muscles, coat, skin health and overall well-being.
  • Puppies require higher levels of proteins and calories for growth and development. Adult dogs should be fed a balanced diet to maintain their weight and muscle mass.
  • Senior dogs are recommended to be given a balanced diet, as their physical activities are lesser at that age. Veterinarians recommend a special diet for senior dogs to maintain their energy levels and health.

Note: These are general guidelines. Consult a veterinarian to determine the specific dietary needs of your dog.

Selecting Good Quality Food

  • Give them high-quality dog food recommendations that have animal-based protein and support muscular health. You can give them supplements that help joint and digestive health, leading to overall health of the Cane Corso.
  • Omega-3 fatty acids - like in fish oil – have anti-inflammatory qualities. This helps reduce pain caused by osteoarthritis, a common health issue in dogs like Cane Corso.
  • Vet-recommended probiotics help in maintaining the overall gut health of your dog.

Certain food items should be avoided for a Cane Corso:

  • Avoid feeding high-fatty food items as this leads to indigestion and gradual obesity.
  • Some human food like chocolates, onion, garlic, corn and soy can cause severe damage to the dog, and hence it needs to be avoided.
  • Avoid foods that contain artificial preservatives, colors and flavors. These can cause allergic reactions in Cane Corsos.

Medical Care

The Cane Corso Association of America (CCAA) has identified some of the common health issue that are found in Cane Corso-

  • Obesity: Maintaining body weight is very essential for big dogs. Over weight causes stress on their body, and affects their energy levels. Hence, the need for your Italian Cane Corso to have a balanced diet and regular physical activity is a must.

  • Idiopathic Epilepsy:  This refers to seizures that happen suddenly in dogs due to an unknown cause. While there is no cure for this condition, seizures can be managed by medication.

  • Demodectic Mange: This is a genetic skin disorder that is found in Cane Corsos. The puppies are prone to this. The symptoms include red bumps, scaly skin, hair loss, and severe itching. Luckily, these aren't very severe and sometimes they heal naturally. But, if the symptoms look severe it can be treated through medication.
  • Hip and Elbow Dysplasia: This is a common degenerative issue found in large dog breeds, including Italian Corsos. It causes weakening of joints and hip bones. PennHip procedure helps in detecting the severity of this condition.

  • Bloat and GDV (Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus): This is a common issue found in big dogs, where the stomach is filled with gas and causes bloat. This can cause severe damage and can be fatal. This needs immediate vet intervention. It can be prevented by gastropexy which can be performed during spaying or neutering.

  • Eyelid Abnormalities: Cane Corsos are prone to different eye issues such as,

-Entropion - This is a condition where the eyelid rolls inward and eyelashes rub on the cornea.

-Ectropion - Here the lower eyelid folds away and causes “droopy eye”

-Cherry eye - A prolapsed tear gland appears as a red swelling in the eye corner. This is called cherry eye and it often requires surgical correction to prevent infections.

These conditions can cause severe irritation and cause bacterial infection. Surgery is the only way to correct these eye issues.

  • Nail trimming should be done regularly as the overgrown nails cause discomfort in walking.
  • Check their ears weekly and clean them regularly to avoid accumulation of debris which can cause ear infections.
  • Like all the other dogs, Cane Corso benefits from regular teeth brushing to help them prevent plaque build-up and tartar formation.

Adopt or Shop: The choice is yours!

Cost of buying

₹ 25,000 - ₹ 80,000

If you want a Cane Corso for your home, you have two basic options: buying or adopting.

Buying

The most essential thing when purchasing a pet is choosing a trustworthy breeder. Ensure that any breeder treats the dogs appropriately and follows the moral breeding procedure.

Ask the Cane Corso breeder to provide health certificates and lineage papers to ensure that the dog is healthy and purebred.

The cost of cane corso puppies depends on so many variables from ancestry to the possibility of show quality and breeder reputation.

Adopt

Give a homesick pet all the love with adoption. Maybe breed-specific rescues, a local animal shelter, or other rescue groups have an Italian Cane Corso puppy up for adoption.

Adoption fees usually cover vaccinations, spaying/neutering, and initial medical care. These fees vary, but they are generally lower than they would be to buy from a breeder.

Now that you know what it takes to raise a Cane Corso, are you ready to take the next step to pet one?

Research: Do thorough research about the breed, its requirements, health issues,  temperaments, traits, and compatibility. See if Cane Corso dogs are a good fit for your lifestyle.

Find reputable sources: Before buying a Cane Corso puppy, look for a trustworthy breeder who practices ethical breeding. Also, check out the local rescues or shelters if you are planning to adopt.

Visit breeder/adoption centers: Make a plan to visit the kennels or adoption centers before going to buy or adopt the dog. Know about their behavior, health, immunization, history, and lineage.

Ask for documentation: Do not miss the health certification, vaccination record, and any other related document from the breeder before buying the puppy. If you are adopting, make sure you inquire about the behavior and past and recent health conditions.

Prepare your home: It is your duty to make a comfortable living space for the dog before bringing it into your life. So make sure you are well aware of the requirements, such as space, time, and commitment needed to have a dog at home. Ensure you have enough supplies, grooming tools, a bed, a food bowl, and other necessities.
